Hung, C. (2015). Citizen journalists as an empowering community for change: A case study of a Tawainese online platform ‘PeoPo’. In G.D. Rawnsley & M. T. Rawnsley (Eds), Routledge handbook of Chinese media (pp. 161-177). Milton Park, Oxon: Routledge.

In this research, Hung speaks about the emergence of PeoPo, a Citizen Journalism Platform in Taiwan that has brought about many advantages to the growth of user-generated content online. The scope of this article covers a debate and a discussion on the reliability of news content that is being presented by Taiwanese citizens as it lacked professional journalism training. I have found this particular article to be of good use because it fully explains the operational side of those mending the platform in ensuring that only quality-written news pieces are being uploaded online. Sets of strict rules are to be followed at all times which was found to be important to keep all the citizen journalists on track. There has also been much emphasis on the idea that active participation leads to the empowerment of the people themselves which seems to have a very powerful effect on the ways they produce content as well. This article is found to be relevant to the essay question as it actually provides a strong example of contemporary times where participation and collaboration of the population is very important in creating an unbiased opinion on a particular topic. The article also provides an explanation of the participant’s motivation in actually wanting to involve themselves in the creation of online content. In terms of the reliability of this article, it was something that was easily determined as this article has already been published which can then be proven through the ISBN number stated on the very top of every page.
